Here are the details for Sunday, September 5th... Starting Point U.S. Bank at 119th and Roe Avenue Leawood, KS Starting Time : NOON Destination: Hillsdale Bank and BBQ Drivemaster: Mark Moody mark.moody@me.com
(driving instructions will be distributed on Sunday before we begin)
It’s really good when the members of a nationwide organization have the opportunity to meet together. Such was true when I had the opportunity to attend the MBCA Fall National Board Meeting in St Louis. I was able to compare notes with other section leaders and members of the National MBCA Board of Directors. It was nice to hear accolades as other sections heard about our own Spassnacht and the First Saturday Speaker Series that the Kansas City Section hosts every month. But, I came away from this particular outing with an event idea I’d like to implement, thanks to the San Francisco Bay Area Section. They have a unique program called the First Sunday Drive. This event focuses on the common bond between our members; our cars, and what we do with them; drive.
The task is simple enough. One drive sponsor is appointed for each of the 12 months of 2010. He/she is responsible to plan a route and a destination. The starting point will always be US Bank 119th & Row at Noon. We meet up on the First Sunday of the month, and follow the driving route as a group to our destination. Sometimes the final destination will be a secret until the Sunday Morning, and sometimes announced in advance. I think we want to keep it to 90 minutes or less from the I-435 loop, in any direction. We'll usually use some of the scenic back roads of the area, and finish up at a place for lunch/picnic, or roadside attraction.
There is so much to see within a short drive from home, so, why not experience it with your “Benz Buddies”?
Hope to see you at the next "First Sunday Drive!"

Definitely worth considering, although the winter months might be challenging! Shawnee Mission Park for a picnic would be good for an in-town tour. The Mini club has collected scenic and winding road routes from our members - maybe I can review those for additional ideas.

I think this would be great to do! Like kevin said though winter may be a challange, but it would be great to do never the less. I think we should push for it and see what the results would be

You could always modify the starting month. March the weather really starts to straighten up. My .02 M

Where's your sense of adventure? How about trying to find the best chili joint within 90 minutes from home? Or sipping the hot spiced cider at Snow Creek, and then warm struedel in Weston? Who's got the best fireplace in the area? These cars are used driving in the Alps! Pop on the Blizzacks and Gimme snow!!!

All sound good, but I might have to rent an M-class to venture out in the snow. Even if I wanted to try the SL in the snow, I'd have to get a tow truck to follow me. Or I could just put an MB decal on my Mini Cooper S.

I like this as well, but I agree with the winter months comments. I suppose I could always drive (cough) my other German car...

Hey all...
I like the idea - sounds fun and gives us another opportunity to get together. My older 'Benz is hibernating during the winter months - unless it's a clear day. Then I like to get her out for a little exercise. Matter of fact, I think I'll drive it today.
If it's wintry, then I'll drive the other M-B ... now equipped with a new set of Michelin X-Ice 2 winter tires.
I'd like to suggest we even include a few 'day' trips on occasion. Join the fun & bring the family.

I hate to be the one to ask, but are we being strict with this and limiting the drives to Benz-only? If it's a sloppy day, the SL is staying in the garage. Rust paranoia.

Hey, we just wanna have some fun. Drive whatcha can. I can remember Jeanne White running a rallye in her Buick!
I wouldn't get my old SL out in the slop either... She's usually covered and in the loft, from Halloween 'til St Paddy's Day.
Bring your Mini, it's German (kinda)....

Me too. I had to shovel about four to six inches of freshly-fallen global warming off my rather steep drive .

Actually, Today's Sunday Drive was a bit shorter than what we were expecting. The concensus of the seven, that braved the elements, was to "glovebox" the Parkville drive for another day, and instead take in the Brunch at Bravo's, right across the street in Town Center Plaza. I'm pleased to say that we made great time of the trip, and no one got lost! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Jeff Klepac is the Drive Master for February's First Sunday Drive. I hope that Mother Nature will be kinder next month. Stay tuned for all of the details.

I had a great Sunday Drive down a snow-packed I-29 from Omaha to KC. One lane road most of the way. Let's cross our fingers for Feb!!!
